Investment Governance is about how to oversee the investment processes. It must incorporate the leadership's vision and culture. It covers not just the organisational structure, terms of reference, and the management information derived from the processes, but also more importantly the interpretation of that information and the decision making that follows from the business culture.

I ran the investment governance of Skandia Investment Group, covering life funds, UK OEICS and Dublin UCITS. I tightened governance through enforcing discipline, providing challenge to the investment process and customer outcomes, and provided practical support to the Boards and investment teams. This work was further enhanced by founding what is now the Old Mutual Responsible Investment Committee to provide a governance forum for the business in its capacity as both an asset owner and as an investment manager.

Investment Governance is not just a regulatory requirement. It is an attitude of mind that improves the efficiency of an organisation and its customer outcomes. For an independent review of your existing governance or initial discussion on how I may be able to help your business improve its governance practices, contact me at james@astewt.com.
